A project takes on its own life

or at least its own blog.

The Avantgarb{age} series, which started here on this blog as the Trash Fashion series with Argentine designer Aidana Baldassarre now has its own web space, Avantegarb{age}

We’ve finished shooting, finished processing (sort-of) and we’ve even put together a small sample book to ship around. Most importantly, we’ve started contacting publishers. I approach this stage with the blissful ignorance of one avoiding the reality of book publishing and jumping in despite the sharks in the water.

The mantra: What does it hurt to try? Which translates we’ll be sending out proposals, even without that golden personal contact inside the organization.

So, well that sort of brings me to a request. If you like the work (or not) and have a contact inside a publishing company, we’d be grateful for the information. You can email me directly at cate (at) cateincba (dot) com.

    Interesting. Possibly I could suggest something like this to my local community? See, there is a controversy of sorts going on in my part of the verse over a “trash” and “recycling”. Specifically, our city council recently passed a “mandatory recycling ordnance.” Amongst other things, its now mandatory that private residents within the city limits must have trash service; one can no longer just haul their trash to the local dump… well, you can, but you still have to pay for trash service… and… the bill for trash service has basically tripled for a typical residence. You see, we get to have two trash cans now. A big green one for “what goes to the land-fill” and a big blue one for “recyclables.” Like I said, the bill for trash service for a typical residence tripled. Also, the city is getting a 5% cut from local rubbish hauler out of this increase as a “fee”, not a tax, mind you, a fee. Anyway, businesses within the city are hit particularly hard. Some sort of “mystery” formula was used to determine how many recycling bins a business “needed” and, thus, how much their “bill” would be for mandatory recycling. Now I’m not bashing on recycling or anything. I do wish there was less miss-information out there surrounding recycling; in some sense, it seems to be more about a political agenda, rather then the actual feasibility of recycling certain materials, yes, I mean plastic. Some around here are REALLY wrapped around the axle about this. Equating the new city ordnance to the worst thing that happened to personal freedoms since… well… since I don’t know what they think. Now I’m not one to shy away from a good discussion of such, but geeze, this is trash we’re talking about folks. Most of us just want it to go away and not be thought of at the cheapest possible price and with the least amount of effort… which, IMO, really in-lies the problem.

    Anyway, I digress, but as I wheel my trash bin and recycling bin to the curb tonight before bedtime, perhaps I’ll pause to see what’s in that big blue recycling bin and muse over what sort of “art” I could make with the contents there-in. Likely nothing as creative (tie dress gal) or disturbing (rubber guy), sorry, as here-in, but in the end, I’m sure I’ll just close the lid and leave it there for the truck to pick-up sometime in the wee hours of tomorrow… lest I get myself in trouble. ;-)
