Sim para o Português. BBC Brasil publishes Avantgarb{age}.

You can blame Google Translator if my ‘Yeah for Portuguese,’ above in the title, didn’t quite come out correctly. I don’t yet speak the language, but feeling a little motivated to learn today. I’ve been in contact with a writer over at the BBC Brasil website for the past week or so about running images from the Avantgarb{age}, The Art In Wearing Trash project and today the images were published.

I was back in the states recently for a visit and my 13y.o. niece asked me to do some ‘modeling’ type photos for her since she is interested in it. While I spend a lot of time photographing people, I don’t often work with models. That is, my aim isn’t to make the product look good, be it clothing or make-up or whatnot, but to look for the person beyond all of that, or underneath it. What I saw in my niece that day was a hint at what will be graceful long limbs (her legs are almost as long as mine) and both a confidence and playfulness. The blue tutu was her pick. So yes, I asked her mom’s permission first, but I thought I’d share a few of my favorites. And if you happen to know anything about youth and modeling send me an email, so I can pass it on to my sister.

Thanks for taking the time to click on through the link below. While it can be hard to receive a request for funding (and trust me it is no picnic asking for it), I love the idea of Kickstarter. As they say in the tagline: A new way to fund and follow creativity. Think of it as the annual NPR fund raising drive. You get something in return and in this case, it is my photography work. A project takes on its own life

The Avantgarb{age} series, which started here on this blog as the Trash Fashion series with Argentine designer Aidana Baldassarre now has its own web space, Avantegarb{age}

We’ve finished shooting, finished processing (sort-of) and we’ve even put together a small sample book to ship around. Most importantly, we’ve started contacting publishers. I approach this stage with the blissful ignorance of one avoiding the reality of book publishing and jumping in despite the sharks in the water.

The mantra: What does it hurt to try? Which translates we’ll be sending out proposals, even without that golden personal contact inside the organization.

So, well that sort of brings me to a request. If you like the work (or not) and have a contact inside a publishing company, we’d be grateful for the information. You can email me directly at cate (at) cateincba (dot) com.

The Trash continues…

Aidana20I’m talking about the Trash Fashion series. One last shoot I did weeks ago, but have not posted. These are only a small fraction of the 1900 overall images I’ve shot over four shoots. I should edit in camera more I suppose. But I don’t and I expect I won’t.

It has been great working with the ‘models.’ I use quotes ( scare quotes actually) for a specific reason. The women and man in the photos are not professional models and their comfort infront of the camera varied widly, but what each brought was an excitement for the clothing, the art and the shoot. That is WONDERFUL. The caps are worthy if you’ve ever worked with someone who was very uninterested in being there with you and yet still, you needed to pull a creative photo out of your @ss.

Excitement means everything. All else can be learned.

I was photographing a local Buenos Aires designer’s alternative fashions recently. Aidana uses rubber and other material to create a very unique style of clothing. Based on the materials she uses I saw the clothing in a hard light and was looking for a grungy, futuristic style. I’ve never been able to play with photoshop as much as I did on these images, but the idea is fashion, not journalism and I am taking the liberty to create the impressions I would like to communicate. Gracias a Steve. (Several previous photos removed at the request of the model. She has asked not to participate.)

Buenos Aires Fashion Week came and went with their fall/winter 2009 collection on display for several days in La Rural last week. I talked myself into a photography press credential for one night and photographed some local designers. Among them are Paula Cahen D’Anvers and Laurencio Adot. Also showing that evening was the collection by Lacoste. I enjoyed each collection, but Adot’s grabbed my attention for the dramatic colors enhanced in the spotlight. That made for interesting shooting as the camera settings changed enough from the entrance to the end of the runway.
