Reuse and Recycle (and no, I’m not talking about my brain, but it does feel like it today)

While my cat snores on the couch I am pacing my studio apartment. I’ve spent too much time in it lately. Too much time on the computer. So yeah, here I am writing a blog post. Whatever. I am nothing if not a glutton for punishment.

Brief round-up with a photo to share. I finally have the fliers for the show and I am happy. I won’t say HAPPY, but happy none-the-less. The printing is not all I had hoped it would be but I’ve decided that I don’t care. It has turned out to be a small price to pay on some of them for the overall benefit. You see, I chose to use the backside of previous printed paper. Sort-of – Recycle, Reuse – that type of thinking. It fits with the theme. It is good. You should try it.

Regardless if the whiteness of the paper is 91% or 90% is not a making me regret my decision. I am HAPPY that I could find a solution. I was originally told that commercial grade recycled paper doesn’t exist in Argentina. What?! Right, it doesn’t really. Yet. That can change and will I’m sure, but doesn’t do me or any of the other environmentally attuned businesses out there any good right now. So, see for yourself, I chose to use paper that was misprinted, or not accepted because of a fault. They all look good to me actually, but hey, I’m not complaining. I didn’t have to buy it. I just reused it.

flier for photo exhibit. Avantgarb{age}, The Art in Wearing Trash

In other news I’ll be picking up the framed photos tomorrow. Yeah! Holy cow, I’ll have framed photos at a meter long hanging out in my apartment collecting cat fur for the next few weeks. Egads. BTW… if you ever want to seriously attack your self-esteem, plan a photo exhibit. I am staring at fliers that have my name printed in large letters and for some reason this makes me vaguely aware that my name is long. And Irish. And large. Okay, back to reality. I’m excited that with some fantastic support I’ve reached and exceeded my goal with Kickstarter (btw… 22 hours to go. All support helps! And you get photos for it).

With the new things I am hatching for this year I’ve created a new page on my website. It is Latest News, where you check out the… well, latest news and exhibits, etc… You can get copy of the Avantgarb{age} flier there and check out my supporters for the project. Many Thanks to you all again.

Beyond Avantgarb{age}, which has been fairly all consuming this past week, I am finished with the first version of the subte musicians and will be posting that shortly. I am looking to publish and talking to a few editors, so it will be a bit before I put it up.

Anyway, I’m outta here. It’s Friday and I should go try to have a life. Cheers.

Pardon the digital dust

You might notice, browsing through the site in the next few days, a few hiccups. I am in the process of updating gallery setting and improving cutline visibility. So if you stumble up on unfinished cutlines, strange photo titles or a gallery that just looks different from the rest, it is probably because I’m on the other end trying to figure out what the heck I want and/or how to actually do it. I’ve found with more practice that working on the site is easier than the major redesign the end of last year,  but it is not with out the periodic frustrations. Most likely there will be spats of activity in which a particular gallery looks different from one minute to the next. That will inevitably be followed by a break in which I go running to regain sanity. In the end however, it will all look prettier.

Unimportant Observations

…of one photographer currently running around Buenos Aires

WELCOME to my blog. This blog began a few years back as lapelirroja.wordpress.com. In moving to the new site and combining my various photo sites, the blog needed to migrate as well. In looking at older posts you may find links that no longer work or a missing image here or there. You’re welcome to email me if you encounter one. I will make an effort to update.

Going forward this blog will continue to be a collection of visual musings, photographic points of view, opinion and personal experiences. In migrating the blog I reread some very early posts on Buenos Aires and Argentina and was reminded of how growth happens. If I lament feeling stagnant now and again it is because growth mostly happens in small increments and is only visible in time. I realize how simplified my view and opinions were and how complex Argentina is in reality. I’ve come to accept small victories, moving an inch here, a centimeter there and it is only with space, as I add up the days, weeks and nearly three years I’ve been here, that I realized how far I’ve come personally. Professionally, well that has grown too, but in looking back I see more that needs to be done. Rather than be daunted about what was not, I am rather excited about what could be, because I can see what has been. So anyway, here’s to reflection.

Game Faces

Previously I’ve posted images (you can see them here) about the CuJuCa game day for children in Villa 31 behind the Retiro bus station. As I was looking over the images again today, I ran across these five photos. They jumped off the screen at me this time. I see reflected in each of these boys a game face that encompasses the look in the eyes, an open mouth yelling in celebration, the lean to the body or the twist of a hand. The game face is a face determined. It is a face reflecting, nerviousness, struggle, defeat, celebration and concentration. The boys here were focusing their attention on a ring toss game.

PROUDLY Represented by ZUMA Press

Good news.

I am now represented by ZUMA Press . ZUMA began in the 1990′s by Scott Mc Kiernan and has since grown to represent more than 1,200 photographers throughout the world. I’m sure that number is growing as more photographers look to work independently. However, I can say ZUMA press now represents more than 1,200 + 1.
