While there are many organizations in Buenos Aires seeking volunteers, there is no central place, list, etc… to find them. To find your niche you have to ask around and give each a try. Be discerning however, not all volunteer opportunities have the same value for you or those you’d like to help. It is best to ask questions first, attend a function, make sure you understand the commitment they require and they understand the commitment you are willing to give.
More tips for volunteers and some listings can be found here, but again, it is by no means a complete list. Many worthwhile organizations in Buenos Aires are not on-line but function at the neighborhood level. The only way you will find them is by word of mouth.
I am involved with the two below:
- Ojo de Pez – which teaches digital photography, as well as video, to teenagers living in and around La Ciudad Oculta , or the Hidden City. You can follow Ojo de Pez on Facebook and Flickr. There are photo expositions of the students work once or twice a year. Make sure to check out the blog for the latest information.
- Centro Conviven – the umbrella organization under which Ojo de Pez works. Check out their website to see the variety of services they offer the community in La Ciudad Oculta and the surrounding Villa Lugano. They welcome new volunteers.
